This incident started an online debate about the Waffle House's tipping policies.
According to a report from FoxNews.com, a 26-year-old Waffle House waitress and mother of three young children was given a $1,000 tip on Mother’s Day.
“He said, ‘I’m going to bless you today,’” Shaina Brown told FoxNews.com on Tuesday. “He was just trying to show that there are still good people out there.”
Unfortunately, her employer refused to give Brown the well-deserved tip. According to the report, the restaurant has a policy against employees taking large tips when the diner pays via credit card. As Moneywatch notes, there’s always the chance that someone who leaves a tip at 3 am might regret his or her decision later in the day.
“When a guest makes a tip of this size, it is our procedure to refund the tip amount and ask the guest to make the tip in either cash or a check,” Waffle House said in a statement to Fox News.
Fortunately for Brown, she eventually received a check for $1,000 directly from the customer after the kind person was tracked down by a reporter from The Charlotte Observer, FoxNews.com reports.
Brown’s experience may have convinced the restaurant to make some changes.
“This has given us cause to review our procedures so we can get tips to our associates quicker in these unusual situations,” the restaurant wrote on its Facebook page. “It says a lot about this customer that he was willing to tip our associate this generous amount. Our intentions were for the associate to get her tip all along.”
