Sony Pictures announces plans to develop 'Sonic the Hedgehog' feature film

In a press release published today, Sony Pictures revealed they will be partnering with Marza Animation Planet to develop a feature film based on popular Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.

In the two decades since his creation, Sonic the Hedgehog has sold over 140 million video games and starred in a number of comics and animated TV shows. Hoping to capitalize on the popularity of the billion-dollar franchise, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marza Animation Planet announced plans today to develop a film based on everyone’s favorite blue speed demon.

“There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog, and a built-in international fan base. Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we’re looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before,” said Sony Pictures Production President Hannah Minghella.

The statement released by Sony today reveals that the movie will be a combination of live action and computer animation. Evan Susser and Van Robichaux, known for their work with the Upright Citizens Brigade, will be writing the screenplay. Susser and Robichaux are currently writing the CBS series How to Grow Up, a feature film titled Fist Fight, and a live-action The Jetsons film. 22 Jump Street producer Neil Moritz will produce Sonic the Hedgehog through his Original Film banner, and Toby Ascher will act as an Executive Producer.

Fans can look forward to seeing a few of “the most revered and infamous characters of the franchise, including the evil Dr. Eggman.”

“Sonic has had dozens of adventures on the console and the small screen, and we’re thrilled that he’s now coming to the big screen.  Sony Pictures has had great success with hybrid animated and live-action features, and we’re confident that this collaboration will bring a fresh take to Sonic, while still capturing everything that the fans love about him,” said Masanao Maeda, CEO of Marza Animation Planet.

The film’s anticipated release date has not yet been announced.
