One in four Americans has diabetes, unaware of condition, new study finds

An additional 86 million adults, or more than one in every three, suffers from a condition called prediabetes.

Nearly one in every four Americans with diabetes does not know it, according to a recent U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report. More than 29 million Americans suffer from diabetes, in contrast to an estimated 26 million in 2010.

An additional 86 million adults, or more than one in every three, suffers from a condition called prediabetes, marked by higher than normal blood sugar levels,  yet not high enough to be considered type 2 diabetes, the CDC states.

Approximately 15 to 30 percent of prediabetic individuals will  likely develop type 2 diabetes within five years if they do not lose weight or participate in moderate physical activity.

Ann Albright, PhD, RD, director of CDC’s Division of Diabetes Translation, said in a statement, “These new numbers are alarming and underscore the need for an increased focus on reducing the burden of diabetes in our country.” She continued, “Diabetes is costly in both human and economic terms. It’s urgent that we take swift action to effectively treat and prevent this serious disease.”

According to the American Diabetes Association, 29.1 million Americans, or 9.3 percent of the population, suffered from diabetes in 2012. The same source notes that diabetes is often inextricable from complications such as hypertension, hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, strokes, and heart attacks.
