'Bridesmaids' collaborators Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo to reunite in new comedy.
Since the 2011 romantic comedy Bridesmaids proved to be an extremely successful collaboration for Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, the comedic duo have now announced plans to write and star in an as yet untitled TriStar comedy. Wiig will also be making her directorial debut with her work on the film.
“I’ve been wanting to direct for some time now. This seems like the perfect first project,” said Wiig in an interview with the New York Times.
The film is expected to be set in a town by the name of Vista Del Mar – a nondescript Californian town – and will star Wiig and Mumolo as two “best friends who find themselves in over their heads and out of their depths.”
“Kristen and Annie assured me that the film will be a searing and depressing drama, which is what the world needs right now,” joked TriStar Chairman Tom Rothman.
Wiig and Mumola earned an Oscar nomination for their Bridesmaids screenplay. The film ended up grossing nearly $300 million worldwide and became a huge success on DVD. Since then, for nearly three years, fans have been demanding a second collaboration. The comedians, however, had expressed that they “wanted it to be the right time and the right idea.” Now, they revealed, “both of those elements have come together.”
Despite the success of the movie Bridesmaids, the majority of comedy films put out over the past few years have continued to be primarily written and directed by men. In fact, TIME reports that “of the top-grossing movies in 2013, women made up only 16 percent of the writers, directors, producers, editors and cinematographers.” Chairman Rothman told the New York Times that he admires Wiig for her progress in breaking this male-dominated comedy industry mold, stating that “Everybody talks about it needing to change, but Kristen actually wants to do something about it.”
