Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum bring their legendary bromance to theaters with '22 Jump Street.'
Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum seem to have a flawless real-life bromance, but their characters in 22 Jump Street do not get along quite so well. The 21 Jump Street sequel is filled with constant bickering between the duo, forcing them to go through couples counseling and experience a rough and awkward “break up.”
Predictably, as in most movie break-ups, viewers can expect the odd-couple to reunite before the end credits roll. However, according to USA Today’s review of the film, it is 22 Jump Street‘s willingness to be openly predictable and mock conventional romance and comedy films that makes it a successful and enjoyable sequel.
“The self-referential movie is exceedingly aware of its inherent lack of originality, and that knowledge makes for some of the movie’s best jokes. If this all sounds strangely circular, that’s because this is the ultimate meta movie. The repetition is exactly the point.”
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller returned to direct the sequel, and their chemistry combines perfectly with that of the action-comedy’s leading physical comedians. Hill and Tatum reprise their roles of undercover cops Jenko and Schmidt, who have graduated from pretending to be high schoolers and now have to pose as college undergrads.
While a third film in the “Jump Street” series is yet to be announced, end credits for 22 Jump Street feature a mocking list of future installments – audiences may have to look forward to 23 Jump Street: Medical School, Culinary School, Traffic School, Beauty School, then Jump 4 Ever: The Animated TV series and eventually, Jump Street: Retirement Home.
While Schmidt and Jenko experience their fair share of relationship issues, the homoerotic theme of their partnership helps make this the best bromance film of the summer and it would not be surprising if its near-inevitable box office success leads to at least one of those sequels being green-lighted.
“22 Jump Street is all about clownish male bonding and Hill and Tatum’s pairing is as ludicrously inspired as they come. So, bring on the parade of sequels,” writes USA Today.
22 Jump Street premieres in select theaters Thursday and opens nationwide on Friday.
