A few curves lead to a ton of attention.
Beauty pageants are an almost comically self-aware display of female sexual objectification, so it comes as no surprise that any contestant whose appearance isn’t cookie-cutter receives a disproportionate amount of attention – particularly in a bikini. That’s what happened at Sunday night’s Miss USA pageant to Miss Indiana contestant Mekayla Diehl – only this time, the attention wasn’t particularly negative. When it appeared that Diehl was perhaps not as lithe as her competitors, the twitterverse exploded in praise of her “normal” body.
Listed at 5′ 8″ and wearing a size four, Diehl’s body is anything but “normal” compared to the population as a whole. Still, that didn’t stop viewers from appreciating her slightly more curvaceous figure. “Miss Indiana shows you don’t have to be super skinny to be beautiful,” tweeted @Hi_ItsKenna. “Finally a contestant that’s not a bag of bones,” tweeted @terraj21.
Diehl told the Lafayette Journal & Courier that while she watches what she eats and stays active, she doesn’t “go crazy” with diet or exercise. “I like to fill my plate with vegetables and protein,” she said. “I take my dog for walks, ride bikes, go on hikes. I jump rope, I do plyometrics.”
