A New York girl’s drawing of a water purification system beat out more than 100,000 other submissions to win Google’s 2014 Doodle contest.
Eleven-year-old Audrey Zhang received a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 Google for Education technology grant for her school, Island Trees Memorial Middle School in NY. In addition, Google donated $40,000 in her name to charity that provides clean water to schools in Bangladesh.
The Doodle Contest’s theme this year was: “If I Could Invent One Thing to Make the World a Better Place…”
“To make the world a better place, I invented a transformative water purifier,” said Zhang on the contest winners page. “It takes in dirty and polluted water from rivers, lakes, and even oceans, then massively transforms the water into clean, safe and sanitary water, when humans and animals drink this water, they will live a healthier life.”
