Rare 'mono mono' twins head home in time for Father's Day

The mother spent two months in the hospital on "near total bed rest" prior to the C-section to lower the risk of pregnancy complications.

Sarah Thistlethwaite and her husband were hoping that Jenna and Jillian, a set of rare “mono mono” twins, would be home in time for Father’s Day. On Saturday, Sarah and Bill had their wish come true, The Associated Press reports.

Jenna and Jillian were born on May 9 sharing an amniotic sac and placenta at Akron General Medical Center in Ohio. Monoamniotic twins face serious risks, including cord entanglement, which can cut off the blood flow from the placenta to the fetus.

Sarah spent two months in the hospital on “near total bed rest” prior to the C-section to lower the risk of pregnancy complications, ABC News reports. The twins were delivered approximately seven weeks early, but after nearly a month in the hospital doctors said they could go home.

“It’s just nice to have everyone under the same roof,” Sarah Thistlethwaite told The AP. “It was really stressful — you want to pay attention to the little one at home and you just gave birth to two little babies. It was a pull and a tear as to where to go.”

According to the Akron Beacon Journal, the twins were joined by their older brother Jaxon as they left the hospital for the first time.
