PS4 helps Sony outdo Nintendo in console sales

Nintendo's era of post-millennial prosperity came crashing down with the Wii U.

Sony is back on top.

Throughout the 1990s and the early 2000s, Sony reigned as king of the console gaming market. Sony’s original PlayStation platform and its follow-up, the PlayStation 2, dominated competing consoles like the Nintendo 64, the Nintendo GameCube, and the original Microsoft Xbox.

However, in 2006, Sony experienced a slump as its PlayStation 3 sales flagged, partially due to its high price point and redundant game selection. Nintendo benefited, simultaneously releasing the groundbreaking and motion-capture-based Wii console. The original Wii managed to attract audiences of non-gamers and die-hard gamers alike. As a result, the Wii ultimately sold more than 100 million units worldwide. The PS3, in contrast, sold 80 million units as of last November.

Yet, Nintendo’s era of post-millennial prosperity has since deflated with its release of the Wii U. Nintendo’s latest console has recorded disappointing sales largely because it does not strongly differentiate itself from the original Wii. As Nintendo has concurrently struggled with sizable monetary losses and financial troubles, Sony has bounced back. In fact, according to a recent report from The Telegraph, Sony is dominating console game sales for the first time in the better part of a decade.

Indeed, towards the end of the March 2014 fiscal year, Sony moved a total of 18.7 million consoles, handily beating Nintendo’s 16.3 million in sales. Microsoft finished third with  11.6 million units.  Though Microsoft’s console sales seeming disappointing, actually, unlike Sony and Nintendo, Microsoft does not have a handheld platform to help energize its console sales. Last fall, the release of the Xbox One pushed Microsoft’s annual growth to 16 percent.

Nintendo, on the other hand, moved 31 percent in the opposite direction as the Wii U recorded disappointing sale numbers, while the company’s long-profitable handheld system, the 3DS, also saw lower sales. Similarly, Sony’s handheld platform, the Playstation Vita,  diminished in sales compared to the previous year. Yet, ultimately, the popularity of the new Playstation 4 console, continues to fuel Sony’s momentum.
