Actor and comedian Tracy Morgan is in critical condition after the Mercedes limousine bus he was traveling in was struck by a tractor-trailer, resulting in a six-vehicle accident that left one person dead and three others seriously injured.

The incident occurred in the northbound lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike around 1:30am Saturday morning as Morgan, 45, was returning from a performance at the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino in Dover, Delaware. He is currently in the Intensive Care Unit at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he is surrounded by members of his family and receiving “excellent care”, according to Morgan’s publicist, Lewis Kay.

The extent of his injuries is unknown at this time and the hospital is only saying that a patient by the name of Tracy Morgan is there, but would not confirm that it is the actor.

Trooper Greg Williams, spokesman for the New Jersey State Police, says the cause of the accident stemmed from the driver of the tractor-trailer failing to observe slow-moving traffic ahead of him. “At the last minute, he swerved to try and avoid the Mercedes limo bus, but struck it from behind, forcing the limo to rotate and overturn”, explained Williams.

According to police, fatigue may have been a factor in the crash, as the driver of the tractor-trailer had fallen asleep at the wheel and woke up too late to avoid impact. Two tractor-trailers were involved in the crash as well as two other cars and a SUV. Members of the National Transportation Safety Board have been dispatched to the scene to further investigate alongside State Police.

James McNair, 63, was killed in the crash. He had been traveling in the limo bus with Morgan. Jeff Millea, Morgan’s assistant, as well as two other men, Harris Stanton and Ardley Fuqua, Jr. are all listed in critical condition.
