To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Tetris, Blue Planet has licensed all manner of merchandise around the game.
In the realm of classic video games, few seem more ageless than the block-matching title that is Tetris, which makes it all the more notable that the game marked its 30th birthday on Friday.
Indeed, according to a report from Gamespot.com, Tetris was released on June 6, 1984, making Friday the 30th anniversary of the seminal game’s release. Despite its age, Tetris is still as relevant to modern gaming as ever before. Blue Planet Software, the company that owns and manages the Tetris brand today, claims that the game has amassed more than 425 million paid downloads on mobile platforms. New titles in the series are also on the way for the Xbox One and the Playstation 4.
Of the people still hooked on Tetris even 30 years after its initial release, at the top of the list is Alexey Pajitnov, the creator of the game himself. Pajitnov says that he still finds Tetris “addicting” and still plays the game “a few times a week.” He also says that he has met countless fans across the globe who feel similarly about the game’s simple but engaging play strategy.
Blue Planet has faith that Tetris has another 30 years of life left in it, and based on the current landscape of gaming, they might be right. Popularity for the game was not as high in the 1990s and 2000s as it was upon its release in the 80s, thanks in part to a greater shift toward advanced 3D gameplay. However, the modern age of mobile gaming has brought back the appeal of simplistic puzzle games, and Tetris is leading the charge.
In fact, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Tetris, Blue Planet has licensed all manner of merchandise around the game. From Halloween costumes to robes, slippers, leggings, socks, shoes, towels, shower curtains, and rugs, fans of the game will soon be able to bedeck themselves and their homes in merchandise themed around the Tetris visual aesthetic.
