Peyton Reed beats out David Wain, named "Ant Man" Director

The scramble for a new director is over and Peyton Reed has emerged victorious among the long list of directors said to be in the running for the role.

The clock is ticking, and for weeks names have been discussed and presented as possible “Ant Man” directors.

Well the wait is over and Peyton Reed has bested the competition with reports indicating that he has been selected to be at the helm of the Marvel film.

He beats out Wet Hot American Summer‘s David Wain in the process who, according to The Hollywood Reporter, was seen as the frontrunner to take over for the recently-departed Edgar Wright. Adam Mckay and Rawson Marshall Thurber were also rumored to be considered, but declined the offer. Wain would be a strong choice because of his long relationship with the film’s star Paul Rudd. Wain has already worked on several films with Rudd, including “Wanderlust”, “Role Models”, and They Came Together”, which hits theaters on June 27. Sources say that the single biggest thing Marvel is looking for is someone who can work with the talent already assembled– leading many to believe that Wain would be selected.

It’s likely that Reed’s familiarity with comedy and the Marvel world is what led to his selection. He directed Bring It On, Down With Love, The Break-Up, and Yes Man. He also developed the Fantastic Four at Fox for years before Tim Story took over the property.

Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Pictures were searching for a new director for “Ant-Man” after Edgar Wright exited the project due to alleged script re-write. Cast member Michael Douglass said of Wright’s departure, “I was, very disappointed. I’m a big fan of his movies [and] it’s a very disappointing situation.”

He added that Wright’s exit, “happened very late in the game [and] I don’t think anybody’s quite recovered.”

Rudd will portray Scott Lang, the newer generation of Ant-Man, in the upcoming action movie, with Patric Wilson, Evangeline Lilly and Matt Gerald taking other roles. The film is due July 17, 2015.
