Apple introduced a number of new features at WWDC, many of which are a step forward towards better device integration.
This week at WWDC, Apple introduced a number of new features to their operating systems, iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite. According to Apple, the new operating systems will largely be about using the right devices and apps at the right time.
One of the key features of the new systems is called Continuity, and it essentially connects all of a users Apple devices. Users will be able to answer calls, receive text messages, and receive notifications on all of their devices. It will also allow users to start working on a document, email or text message on one device, and continue working on it on another.
Much of this will be handled through iCloud, especially when it comes to documents. Despite this, many are hoping that the new features will also work with third party apps, and with apps like iMessage.
Another feature that Apple introduced is the new iCloud Drive, which is essentially a central file system for users documents. On a mac, iCloud Drive will now show up in the users sidebar, and on iOS users will be able to access documents through the iCloud document picker.
This new feature is a big deal for Apple users, because it means that their documents are no longer sandboxed inside the app. Now, users can decide which app to open documents with, as long as that app can handle the file.
The new features in iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite are a step forward towards being able to easily transition from one device to another without any problems. Continuity is sure to be a hit among Apple users, especially those that use more than one Apple device.
