Rumors suggest Apple has acquired team behind Spotsetter app

Recent rumors suggest that Apple has acquired social search engine Spotsetter.

According to recent rumors, Apple has acquired the team behind the social search engine ‘Spotsetter’. While the deal has not yet been officially disclosed, TechCrunch reports that Spotsetter’s investors are happy with the arrangements.

Spotsetter was much like Foursquare, but rather than pulling from one data source, it pulled from a number of data sources. The service was available in both iOS and Android apps, and used friends’ recommendations, as well as those from sources like Yelp, Michelin, and so on. These picks were all placed on a map with Yelp-style pins.

The idea is that users would trust their friend opinions more than those of strangers on the Internet. If, however, a user didn’t have many friends that recommend services on social media, other recommendation services, like Yelp, would come into play.

Spotsetter was founded in 2011 by Johnny Lee and Stephen Tse, and raised $1.3 million in venture capital funding prior to its acquisition.

The rumors suggest that Apple is looking to include Spotsetter into the other services that it provides. Either that, or they simply wanted the team behind it, and are fine removing the app from Google Play and the App Store as is. Both co-founders of the app now indicate on their Linkedin profiles that they work at Apple, and it’s unclear how many of the rest of the Spotsetter team went over to Apple and how many of them did not.

“With fondest emotions, I’m announcing that we are closing down Spotsetter app. We still have big dreams for personalized search for places and look forward to seeing great progress in this area. Thank you everyone for your support over the past years,” said Johnny Lee, a Spotsetter co-founder, in a blog post.
