The paranormal comedy will return to more than 700 cinemas.
This week marks the 30th anniversary of the paranormal comedy Ghostbusters starring Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts.
According to CBS News, Sony Pictures plans to re-release the movie in more than 700 U.S. cinemas starting Aug. 29. The popular flick will enjoy a limited run.
The film quickly became an international blockbuster in 1984, as fans adored the story of supernatural hunters removing pesky ghosts from haunted locales while delivering clever one-liners and fighting ridiculous monsters.
Ghostbusters has remained steadily popular and the many of the actors involved have achieved cult status.
The blockbuster is already widely available on streaming sites, including Netflix. Actress Annie Potts, who portrayed the Ghostbusters’ receptionist Janine Melnitz recently spoke to People Magazine about the dedication of fans — even 30 years later.
“Last time I was in town doing a (theater) show, there was a young man who came several times a week and he was dressed completely as a Ghostbuster, with the pack on his back and everything,” said Potts. “That was interesting.”
Ghostbusters‘ success led to a sequel, two animated spinoff series, toys and video games.
Ghostbusters and its sequel, Ghostbusters II, is scheduled to be released as a special combo-pack with remastered editions in September.
Ramis, who died in February of this year, is fondly remembered by Potts. “(He was) so sweet. Because most of (the cast) had come from improvisation, everything was in flux and alive.”
Many times, this improvisation made it into the movie. “The part where he (Ramis’ character) comes out from under the secretary’s desk and they have this little love thing, that happened in the moment and it was fun to work that way,” adds Potts.
“Ghostbusters, whaddya want?” remains Potts’ most remembered line from the classic flick.
The names and locations of the more than 700 cinemas to rerelease Ghostbusters, honoring the film’s 30-year anniversary, has yet to be revealed.
