Apple iOS 8 will offer customization, lacks iPhone 4 support

Apple's new operating system will be available as a free upgrade to entire iPad line and iPhone 4S and later.

The marquee highlight of the Apple’s Worldwide Developers’ Conference was the fall release of Apple iOS 8 and the host of new features and interface changes that it will bring. However, the updated operating system will be available for most of Apple’s mobile devices, with the exception of the iPhone 4.

iPhone models beginning with iPhone 4S will be supported but iPhone 4 is left out because it’s equipped with an older A4 core chip, according to reports.

In addition to iPhone 4S, the iPhone 5, 5S and 5C will be supported. The looming iPhone 6 and all of its variants will have iOS 8 support regardless of the chip it contains.

All iPad models – which run onn A5 chips – will be supported by iOS 8 as well, and this includes Apple’s full slate: the iPad 2, the iPad with Retina display, the iPad Air, the iPad Mini, and the iPad Mini with Retina display.

Perhaps one of the biggest surprises is that the 5th generation iPod Touch will be supported by iOS 8 as well. This “part of Apple’s product range … puzzles many analysts by its continued existence,” according to PFHub.

PFHub also notes that “Apple’s iOS and Mac platforms appear to be shifting somewhat in the direction of Windows-style design, highlighted by much-enhanced compatibility between the two systems.”

Windows 8-like customization is also another feature of iOS 8 for iPhones. Users will be able to change the item order in Today view of the iPhone’s Notification Center, delete items from this view, and add third-party widgets.

All Mac desktops and laptops currently running Mavericks “will be able to install OS X Yosemite, hardware requirements releases by Apple show,” according to AppleInsider. These include mid-2007 and newer MacBook Pro, late 2008 or newer MacBook Air and mid-2007 or later iMacs, as well as Mac mini (early 2009 or later) and Mac Pro (early 2008 or later).

“Both iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite will be free upgrades for Apple device users coming this fall. Continuity between the two platforms has been a key focus for Apple in their development,” AppleInsider reported.
