'Orange is the New Black' season two expectations

Predictions for season two of 'Orange is the New Black,' premiering June 6 on Netflix.

The entire second season of Orange is the New Black will be released by Netflix at midnight on Jun. 6. The first season left viewers with plenty of questions about the residents of the show’s women’s minimum-security correctional facility in which binge-watchers will finally get their answers in a matter of hours.

While the hit comedy-drama series is based on true events featured in Piper Kerman’s memoir, Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison, those unfamiliar with the memoir are forced to speculate what will take place in season two. However, trailers for the new season provide a few clues regarding what viewers can expect.

One anticipated change is a shift in power inside the correctional facility. She who rules the kitchen rules the prison, but makeshift prison mother, Red, was removed from her head cook position when corrections officer, George “Pornstache” Mendez, set her up as part of his drug smuggling operation. Mendoza then obtained the powerful position, but Red is unlikely to back down without a fight and trailers for the new season show her also squaring off against a new inmate named V, who Red says is “a woman I knew a long, long time ago.” Since the constant conflict between Piper and Alex was a major focus in season one, expect Red’s struggle to regain her Queen Bee status to be a focus in season two.

Fans probably shouldn’t look forward to the birth of Daya’s baby, since the show moves at a fairly slow pace and is not likely to cover nine months in one season. However, viewers should gear up for some definite drama between Daya, the baby’s father – corrections officer John Bennett – and the third member of their love triangle, Pornstache. Having sex with an inmate is illegal and if Daya places the blame for the pregnancy on one of her suitors, he could eventually get incarcerated as a sex offender.

While reviews have revealed that the first episode of season two is Piper-centric and no other regular characters appear in it, trailers make it seem as though Orange is going to become more of an ensemble show. Fans of the series have been extremely vocal about their distaste for its main character, so it would not be surprising if Netflix tried giving the other inmates more airtime.

Finally, fans can expect to see the people in charge of the prison finally getting exposed for their criminal activity. Porstache has smuggled in drugs, masked an overdose as a suicide, and had sex with inmates. Bennett got his inmate girlfriend pregnant. Assistant warden Natalie Figueroa dipped into the prison’s budget to pay for her Mercedes and designer wardrobe. While they have done a great job of covering up their crimes so far, the media are starting to probe and the law is sure to come down on them this season.
