'The Fault in our Stars' breaks Fandango advanced ticket sales record

'The Fault in our Stars,' this weekend's new romantic drama based on John Green's best-selling novel, beats advanced ticket sales record on Fandango.

Despite its featuring of a massive $178 million budget and A-list star, Tom Cruise’s sci-fi blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow might not have what it takes to beat out romantic drama The Fault in our Stars in this weekend’s box office. The modest $12 million-budgeted romantic drama, in fact, is receiving the majority of the hype going into this weekend, with Fandango reporting that the film has sold more advanced tickets than any other romantic drama in the online ticket seller’s 14-year history.

The Fault in our Stars is adapted from John Green’s best-selling novel and tells the story of two teenagers who meet and fall in love at a cancer support group. It stars Shailene Woodley, the actress who received praise from fans for bringing another popular character from a best-selling novel to life earlier this year with her main role in Divergent.

According to Fandango, the film nabbed the record for advanced ticket sales for a romantic drama away from previous record-holder The Vow, which starred Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams and debuted with $41.2 million on its opening weekend. Fandango polled over 1,000 ticket buyers and discovered that 95 percent of them are looking forward to seeing the film in theaters, 81 percent have read the novel, 80 percent plan to see it with a group of friend, and 64 percent named Shailene Woodley as their motivating factor for buying a ticket.

Due to the advance ticket sales numbers, analysts are currently predicting The Fault in our Stars will beat out Edge of Tomorrow in the box office, with early projections estimating at least $30 millon or more in opening weekend earnings for the romantic drama.

Edge is expected to pull in around $25 million, a total which is quite mediocre considering its enormous budget. Both films will be opening at the North American box office this weekend, on June 6.
