The new addition to the franchise will be separate from the J.J. Abrams trilogy.

Die-hard fans that can’t get enough of the Star Wars series of films now have even more to look forward to. A statement released by Lucasfilm on Wednesday revealed that Fantastic Four filmmaker Josh Trank is on board to direct a brand new Star Wars movie.

According to the statement, “In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney continue development of multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. The newest director to come on board is Josh Trank.”

The statement also paid tribute to the talents of the young director: “Trank captured imaginations worldwide with his critically lauded directorial debut Chronicle, a fresh and engaging take on the superhero genre. Trank is currently at work on The Fantastic Four for 20th Century Fox.”

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy gave a few reasons why Trank is the ideal choice to expand the Star Wars franchise: “We’re thrilled to welcome Josh into the family,” she said. “He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX.”

Lucasfilm has so far managed to keep a tight lid on the three planned spinoffs, but there are already rumors that the films may include original stories featuring the characters Han Solo, Jedi master Yoda and bounty hunter Boba Fett. The first spinoff will be directed by Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards and is scheduled for release on December 16, 2016.

While waiting for these stand-alone spinoffs of the Star Wars legend, fans can get ready for the first film of the J.J. Abrams trilogy scheduled for release on December 18, 2015. This film Star Wars: Episode VII, already in production, is set 30 years in the future following the 1983 hit, Return of the Jedi.
