Casey Kasem's family fights over who should control icon's medical care

Casey Kasem's daughter and wife fight over who should be in charge of his medical care.

Paramedics had to transport iconic radio personality and NBC announcer Casey Kasem to a Washington medical facility this Sunday via ambulance, due to complications with his Lewy body disease. Instead of focusing on the well-being of the former host of “American Top 40” and “Casey’s Top 40,” his daughter and wife are busy fighting with each other over who should be deciding his medical care.

After Alzheimer’s, Lewy body disease is the most common type of progressive dementia. After noticing his condition was worsening, Casey’s daughter Kerri Hasem fought to win a California court order in May to become the temporary conservator for her father. However, Casey soon disappeared from the a nursing home he was staying at in Santa Monica, California, and was later found in Washington with his wife, Jean Kasem. This went against the California judge’s order for Casey to stay in the state until he is cleared by a doctor.

According to Casey’s other daughter Julie Kasem and her husband Dr. Jamil Aboulhosn, the radio personality signed papers in 2007 giving his children the power of attorney over his heath care should he become unable to make his own health decisions. Julie and Kerri, along with their brother Mike, have since stated that their stepmother Jean has prevented them from even visiting their father. In court papers last year, Jean claimed Casey’s three children “single-handedly and irreparably shattered” the couple’s lives by deploying public demonstrations and attacks in the media.

The family drama escalated to a new level this weekend, when Jean threw a hunk of meat at Kerri, who simply wished to accompany her father to the hospital. Kerri traveled to Washington and received permission from a Kitsap County judge to take her father to a doctor, but when Jean saw her, she hurled a pound of hamburger at Kerri while quoting  King David of the Bible, saying she was “throwing the meat at the dogs.”

Kerri’s legal representative, Danny Deraney, provided a video of the incident to CNN on Monday. A spokesman for the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office said no deputies saw the meat thrown, and Deputy Scott Wilson says that the office has yet to receive an assault complaint.

The Kasem family is due in Kitsap County court on Friday. A court in California is scheduled to have another hearing soon in order to decide whether Kerri’s temporary conservatorship over her father should be made permanent, since as of now, it only lasts until June 20.

While Casey and his children have yet to make any statement regarding his health status, Deraney told CNN that he is still at the medical facility but is now in stable condition.
