After taking on Proposition 8, Melissa Etheridge finally marries long time partner

Come to my window and down the isle; after taking on Proposition 8, Melissa Etheridge gets her day to walk down the isle.

Melissa Etheridge and long time partner Linda Wallen were married on Saturday night at the San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, California.

They were joined by family and friends. Other prominent lesbians including Rosie O’Donnell and Jane Lynch were in attendance, showing their support for gay marriage and their friend, Melissa Etheridge. Each of these ladies faced some public adversity when they publicly came out of the closet.

The marriage provides a great conclusion to Melissa Etheridge’s public fight to support gay marriage and Proposition 8.

Proposition 8 was a California ballot proposition that eliminated the marriage rights same sex couples gained in 2004. It was created by those that opposed same-sex marriage.

It passed by a fairly narrow margin and started the massive back and forth between legislators, the courts, proponents of Prop 8 and those in favor of same-sex marriage. Melissa Etheridge publicly supported the overturning of Proposition 8, claiming to withhold her tax money as a form of civil disobedience.

The ruling was in fact overturned in 2013, allowing same-sex marriages to resume in the state of California. The judge found it unconstitutional, allowing rights to be removed from an unfavored class of people.

Melissa Etheridge was a prominent American rock musician in the late 1980s and early 1990s. At first, her self-titled debut album only became a hit with the underground circuit. However, her 1990s mainstream hits include “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window.”

She came out publicly as a lesbian in 1993, well after she established herself as a talented rock musician. She became a well-known gay rights advocate and environmental activist. Her publicly facing relationships have provided faces to the gay rights cause.
