Facebook to favor explicitly shared posts

Auto-shared data will still appear in Facebook profiles, it just will no longer be clogging up news feeds.

Facebook announced this week that it would be favoring explicitly shared stories in News Feed over those that are auto-shared.

“We’ve found that stories people choose to explicitly share from third party apps are typically more interesting and get more engagement in News Feed than stories shared from third party apps without explicit action,” Facebook said in a blog post. “We’ve also heard that people often feel surprised or confused by stories that are shared without taking an explicit action.”

The social media company is hardly giving up on auto-shared data though, TechCrunch reports. Facebook will still collect such data about users, and it remains incredibly valuable for targeted advertising. Furthermore, auto-shared data will still appear in Facebook profiles. It just will no longer be clogging up news feeds.

“In the coming months, we will continue to prioritize explicitly shared stories from apps in News Feed and Ticker over implicitly shared stories,” said Facebook Developer Peter Yang in a blog post.

In the post, Yang reveals that tests of the upgraded News Feed algorithm displaying fewer auto-shared stories reduced the total number of times stories shared from other apps were marked as spam by 75 percent.

“I don’t care if one friend listened to a song or read an article,” said TechCrunch’s Josh Constine. “But if 15 of my friends did in a single day, even if none of them shared it explicitly, that content is probably highly relevant.”
