'Reading Rainbow' returns on Kickstarter to get more books out to children

The popular PBS show hopes to raise enough money to help children learn to read.

The PBS show Reading Rainbow has launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring more books to children. LeVar Burton is an actor most famous for his roles in Roots and Star Trek: The Next Generation, but he was also the host of the children’s reading show called Reading Rainbow.

On Wednesday, Burton launched a campaign on the crowd funding website Kickstarter to reach the goal of $1 million within 35 days. The campaign has already been funded over $2.4 million in less than 48 hours of the start date.

In 2012, a successful Reading Rainbow iPad app was released that allowed children to read 10 million books. The aim of the Reading Rainbow Kickstarter is to utilize the Internet to put the Reading Rainbow app on any computer screen and any classroom.

The television showwas canceled due to two reasons: cost of production and effectiveness towards children’s interest in reading. The show cost more than what the co-producers, WNED Buffalo and PBS, wanted to contribute. Along with the idea that the show was no longer the best approach for turning kids into lifelong readers, it was dropped from production.

Burton bought the rights to Reading Rainbow and its name once the show got canceled. He used the name to create the company RRKidz, who created the tablet app for Reading Rainbow.

It’s important to note that one thing the Kickstarter will not do is bring back the classic children’s show that aired from 1983 to 2009. The app will come at a monthly subscription cost unlike the show that aired on public television.

The backers who are hoping to donate to an alternative method of getting books to children might want to look towards nonprofit organizations. Children’s Literacy Initiative and First Book are viable options in support of the same goals as Reading Rainbow.

The Reading Rainbow Kickstarter will be active until July 2.
