Actress Nia Vardalos will be returning to the screen as a first-generation Greek-American woman in the sequel to 2002’s My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Actor John Corbett will also reprise his role in the sequel as the non-Greek who fell in love with Vardalos’ character.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding is considered to be one of the most successful independent films of all time.

The original film followed Greek woman (Vardalos) marrying her non-Greek fiance (Corbett) at a wedding filled with families. The romantic-comedy was made for $5 million and went on to earn more than $241 million at the domestic box office.

Vardalos was nominated for a Best Screenplay Oscar for her writing in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. She has finished the script for the sequel which involves “the reveal of a family secret and a new wedding, described as bigger and fatter, that brings the Greek clan together again.”

Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks will be producing with Vardalos as one of the executive producers on the project.

Joel Zwick was the director of the first movie. There is no director currently attached to the sequel.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding started off as a one-woman play with Vardalos telling tales of her life growing up in a Greek family. Wilson, who is half-Greek, brought the play to the attention of husband Hanks.

It has been 12 years since My Big Fat Greek Wedding hit the big screens. When asked about the delay in the sequel during her book tour, the Oscar Nominated screenwriter stated she was waiting for inspiration.

“Now that I’m experiencing motherhood, I’m ready to write the next chapter of my family story … Of course a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true,” said Vardalos.

The actress just published the book Instant Mom and is currently on a book tour.
