Marvel Studios and Netflix have chosen the actor to portray the superhero Daredevil, and he is 31-year-old British actor Charlie Cox. The drama series will consist of 13 episodes and be appearing on Netflix. In traditional Netflix style, all 13 episodes will be available at once on its premiere date.

The official title of the drama series is Marvel’s Daredevil. The series is currently scheduled to shoot in New York City this July. More announcements will be made as the shooting date gets closer.

Cox is most famous for the recurring character of Owen on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. His other projects include the miniseries Moby Dick, Hello Carter, and the Neil Gaiman’s Stardust.

The actor will be playing Matt Murdock and his alter ego Daredevil. The character of Matt Murdock was blinded at a young age by chemicals which enhanced his remaining senses. He defends his innocent clients during the day and patrols the streets of Hell’s Kitchen, New York City at night.

Screenwriter Drew Goddard (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Cabin in the Woods) was the showrunner for the new series, but has since moved on to Sony’s Spider-Man villain spinoffs. Goddard has written the first two episodes and will remain on the project as a consultant and executive producer.

The new showrunner was announced this past weekend to be Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus). DeKnight will oversee the style of the show. The showrunner did not shy away from showing his excitement for the project.

“Deeply honored to be a part of it,” said DeKnight on his Twitter.

Netflix has acquired the Marvel characters Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage to be turned into a drama series as well. The new characters will focus more on street level crime and politics as opposed to Marvel’s larger scale superhero movies. All the characters including Daredevil are planned to crossover together in a television series titled The Defenders.

Marvel’s Daredevil is scheduled for a Netflix release in 2015.
