The comedienne is leaving 'Chelsea Lately' after seven years.
Chelsea Lately has been a staple on the E! network for seven years, but the late night talk show will have its finale on August 26. An updated version of E! News will move into the vacant 11 p.m. timeslot.
While Handler’s contract with E! was supposed to run until the end of 2014, the TV host has made no secret of her desire to end the relationship with both the show and the network. In a prepared statement, Handler downplayed her negative feelings. “I myself am more surprised than anyone that I was able to hold down a job for seven years, and it was a fantastic seven years,” said Handler. “I will always look back at my time on E! as most people look back at their time in college. I’m glad I went.”
A statement from E! Network president Suzanne Kolb was equally flattering. “We are very proud of Chelsea Lately’s long-running success and the unique space that the series carved out in late night television,” said Kolb. “Chelsea brought a distinct voice to late night with her acerbic wit and fearless commentary, and we look forward to providing fans with a memorable sendoff that lives up to that tradition. Most of all, we are grateful to the Chelsea Lately team for making this show so special for seven years.”
The loss of a signature program puts E! in a rather awkward situation. The network that was launched in the ‘90s as “entertainment television” has morphed into the “Kardashian channel.” E! has been trying to update its roster of scripted shows and has signed longtime news correspondent Giuliana Rancic to a new contract, but ad buyers feel the network needs to do more work on its image problem.
E! is not the only network with a vacancy to fill in the late night department. Earlier this year, David Letterman announced his plans to depart his Late Show while Craig Ferguson is also leaving The Late Late Show. This leaves CBS with two flagship talk shows that need new hosts. Could Handler be one of them?
