'X-Men: Days of Future Past', 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' will feature a double dose of the superhero Quicksilver

The speedy superhero Quicksilver will be portrayed in two different films by two different actors.

The superhero known as Quicksilver will be featured in both X-Men: Days of Future Past and Avengers: Age of Ultron due to a loophole for the character rights. There will be two versions of the character played by two different actors.

The speedy hero currently is in FOX’s X-Men: Days of Future Past which just opened this past weekend. The character is being portrayed by Evan Peters (Kick-Ass) and incorporates a thieving and wise-cracking version of the hero who attempts to break villain Magneto out of prison. In May 2015 Aaron-Taylor Johnson (Godzilla) will be taking his shot at the character in Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The timing for the use of the Marvel hero is purely coincidental between the two big blockbusters though according to X-Men: Days of Future Past screenwriter Simon Kinberg.

“We decided we were going to use Quicksilver way before they decided they were going to use him in The Avengers, so we just made the decision independently,” said Kinberg to the Daily Beast.

X-Men: Days of Future Past didn’t always have the speedster in its original script. Other mutants were considered to be included in the summer blockbuster.

“They have different restrictions because of the way the deal works, although that’s way above my pay grade. Early in the script phase, that character was going to be a young Juggernaut, but Bryan felt we’d exhausted Juggernaut’s powers in X-Men: The Last Stand, and he wanted to see a mutant we hadn’t put on film before who had an interesting visual power,” said Kinberg.

The result was an exhilarating action sequence involving Quicksilver disarming numerous police officers with lighting fast speed. Peters will be reappearing as the character again in the planned sequel already titled X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016.

Avengers: Age of Ultron will be loosely based on a comic story line which involves Quicksilver and his mutant sister, The Scarlet Witch. Avengers director Joss Whedon felt incorporating Quicksilver was an integral part of the story, despite the confusion that can arise.

One person who is certainly not worried is about Quicksilver’s double appearance is Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige.

“The characters (on the screen) are going to be very different. Other than their powers, general audiences might not even know… that the two are related,” said Feige.

Most of the characters for Marvel’s different franchises belong to many film companies exclusively except for a select few chracters.

“There are only a handful of characters that occupy that middle ground…Iron Man is not going to show up over there and Magneto is not going to show up over here. But there are a few gray points even after many years of negotiations … and that only happens with a character like Quicksilver, who has been a part of the X-Men, the son of Magneto in those comics, but also a primary Avenger,” said Feige.

Avengers: Age of Ultron will hit theaters May 2015. X-Men: Days of Future Past is currently in theaters.
