The seventh installment of the 'X-Men' franchise bumped 'Godzilla' from the top spot -- and broke cinema records.
Superhero film X-Men: Days of Future Past has topped the four-day Memorial weekend box office, reports Entertainment Weekly.
The mutant-led movie starring Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence grossed $111 million in ticket sales, domestically.
X-Men: Days of Future Past grossed $302 million worldwide, according to Reuters.
The sales set a new record for the film’s studio 20th Century Fox. X-Men: Days of Future Past is now the studio’s biggest global debut, surpassing even 2009’s Avatar.
In addition, the movie’s domestic sales figures make it the fifth biggest Memorial weekend box office success of all time.
The Marvel Comics movie knocked the Bryan Cranston-led remake Godzilla into second. The giant-monster movie raked in 39.45 million, bringing Godzilla’s domestic total to $156.79 million.
Blended came in third. The Adam Sandler-Drew Barrymore comedy earned $18.19 million on its opening weekend.
Seth Rogen’s Neighbors and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 rounded out the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.
Spider-Man 2 has now surpassed $675 million in sales globally, a feat made possible by impressive ticket sales numbers from China. Movie goers in China have paid more than $90 million — and counting — to see Spidey.
Chinese ticket sales for X-Men: Days of Future Past are on par with, or set to even surpass, these numbers. Reuters reports that movie goers in China contributed $37.7 million in sales.
The $200 million production also stars James McAvoy, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, Nicholas Hoult and Emily Page.
