Osmo app released, connecting real toys with an iPad

Osmo is one of the first apps of its kind, developed specifically for children to help blur the line between physical toys and digital games.

With kids becoming more connected to the digital world, its refreshing when companies create ways for children to enjoy both the digital and the real world. A start-up called Tangible Play aims to do just that, with a new app called Osmo.

Osmo is essentially an app and hardware kit that connects real toys with an iPad. In fact, there are three game sets that work with corresponding apps. The first one is called Newton, which is a drawing app and obstacle course. The second is called Words, which is a game that resembles Scrabble and asks players to identify words based on letters shown on the screen. The third is simply Tangram, and requires users to create shapes based on the images on the screen.

The games come with physical toys in a number of colors that connect to corresponding apps. After the companion apps are downloaded, users clip on a small mirror device that reflects the gaze of the camera down, allowing the camera to capture the image of the toys on the desk. Because of this system, the app is able to create a a low-latency experience for children.

The goal of Osmo is to help improve fine motor skills, social IQ and hand-eye co-ordination. Its also to help blur the line between physical toys and digital games, and is one of the first of its kind for children.

While Osmo is currently in its early days of funding, sets are available for pre-order for $49. Once the $50,000 funding goal is reached, Osmo will sell for $99. The apps will be compatible with the iPad 2 and up, and no official Android version has been announced yet, though it likely will be depending on the success of Osmo.
