Katy Perry joins George Washington at the National Portrait Gallery

A new painting at the National Portrait Gallery immortalizes Katy Perry in an elaborate cup cake getup.

A painting of Katy Perry is schedule to join the famous faces of George Washington and others at the National Portrait Gallery, located in Washington, D.C.

The portrait was painted by Will Cotton and is entitled “Cupcake Perry.” It features Katy Perry as a stylized cupcake wearing a cupcake wrapper as a dress and a candy headband on her head.

The National Portrait Gallery decided that Katy Perry represented “an American tradition of strong women entertainers who have ‘turned the tables’ on their audience by challenging the supposedly superficial representation of their pop personas.”

Kim Sajet, the director the National Portrait Gallery, cites how performers like Katy Perry are “musically powerful, visually alluring and business savvy.”

In that case, Katy Perry’s inclusion is perhaps less puzzling. She is managing a successful musical empire while wearing ridiculous and colorful getups.

She’s a successful musician, social media mogul, and philanthropist with a net worth estimated around $95 million dollars. This seems unbelievable for someone who is to be immortalized in a painting as a “cupcake.”

However, it’s certainly this dichotomy that is part of Katy Perry’s appeal. She’s both extremely feminine, wearing colorful clothes and lots of makeup, and she’s a business savvy entrepreneur who has generated millions of dollars.

In fact, in 2011 she tied Michael Jackson’s record for having the most number one singles.

The National Portrait Gallery is part of the Smithsonian in Washington D.C.. It is a museum that aims to tell the story of America through those that have helped shaped its culture.
