The follow-up to last years Surface Pro 2 is highly anticipated, and has so far garnered positive feedback.
The much anticipated Microsoft Surface Pro 3 was released earlier this week, and so far has gotten some pretty positive feedback.
The device is aimed at being a laptop replacement rather than a tablet replacement, and the price of the Surface Pro 3 confirms this. The lowest variant of the Surface Pro 3 starts at $799, which is a little much for a tablet, but not for a laptop.
The Surface Pro 3 has a main competitor in the MacBook Air, and when pitted against the popular Apple laptop, it definitely holds its own. At 1.7 pounds the device is heavy for a tablet, but light for a laptop, and while it doesn’t have a lot of options in the way of connectivity, users can make do with the mini-display port and the USB 3.0 port that it does have.
The fact that the device runs the full version of Windows is also helpful, giving users a much wider range of apps than if it ran on the mobile version of Windows.
The design of the Surface Pro 3 has definitely improved over the Surface Pro 2. Some major problems from the Surface Pro 2 were definitely improved upon when it comes to design, including the new kickstand, which allows users to set the angle at which they want to view the screen.. The battery is also quite nice, running 9 hours on standard use, as advertised. This should be enough to get users through a normal day of use.
While most first impressions of the device are quite positive, it’s not all good. Users have noted it being a little time-consuming to get the device into laptop mode, having to go through a routine involving snapping on the keyboard, flipping out the kickstand, and so on. It is also gets frustrating changing between apps and the desktop mode.
