The tool will also better allow Facebook customers to see which apps are accessing their account and shut those down in one convenient place.
More than perhaps any other social network on the web right now, Facebook has frequently come under fire for its privacy policies, which either change seemingly at random and leave users trying to settle into the new status quo, or which freely use customer information for advertising and other questionable purposes.
Now, however, Facebook is pushing to allow for greater levels of transparency for its privacy policies. According to a blog published by CBS News on Friday, Facebook will soon make available to users a “spring cleaning” tool that will help them to better manage the privacy settings of their profiles. The checkup tool will supposedly offer a comprehensive overview of profile settings and give users the opportunity to decide how to restrict viewing of posts or different kinds of content. The tool will also better allow Facebook customers to see which apps are accessing their account and shut those down in one convenient place.
In addition to the tool that makes Facebook’s privacy settings more transparent and easier to manage, the company has also recently shifted its defaults to offer a more private facade for users. For instance, new Facebook users now start with their posts set to only be viewable by friends; it used to be that posts were, by default, viewable to everyone on the social network.
Still, while it seems as if Facebook is working toward respecting its customers’ privacy rights more greatly, that may not necessarily be the case. While the company is helping users restrict who views their content, it is also not letting go of the data collecting services that allow it to learn more about about customers for advertising. In fact, the CBS blog also talks about a new Facebook feature that listens to the music or video you have playing and tries to identify it to gather even more information about you. Not exactly the look of a company that wants its users to feel safe and secure.
