Democratic U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan is calling for VA Secretary Eric Shinseki’s resignation amid inadequate VA care that resulted in the death of several veterans.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan is calling for VA Secretary Eric Shinseki’s resignation amid a scandal that involves the cover up by VA employees to conceal the treatment delays faced by dozens of veterans.
Nolan has also demanded that GOP House Speaker John Boehner establish a special committee to investigate the allegations of mismanagement, fraud and abuse at the agency.
The VA is an agency tasked with caring for the nation’s veterans. Claims have mounted that dozens of veterans died while waiting months for medical care from the agency. There have also been allegations that some department employees falsified data to hide the wait times veterans endured before receiving treatment.
Nolan is one of the few congressional Democrats demanding Shinseki’s ouster. President Obama and most other members of his party have elected to stand by Shinseki.
“These issues did not begin with Secretary Shinseki, but he’s had six years to fix the problems that plague this agency, and it’s highly unlikely that any more time will make a difference,” said Nolan.
Republican Stewart Mills III, who is challenging Nolan in the Eighth Congressional District, has also called for Shinseki’s firing.
Meanwhile, Shinseki has vowed to stay in office and pledged to address the allegations of health care mismanagement by his agency that led to the death of several veterans.
VA officials launched a nationwide audit of facilities this week to review allegations of doctored schedules and delayed medical care for veterans. Shinseki expects to deliver initial findings to Obama next week.
Meanwhile, the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee threatened to issue subpoenas to three senior VA officials if they fail to appear before the panel by May 30. The officials had failed to appear for an initial hearing in which the panel called them to testify about the department’s efforts to comply with the information requests.
