According to a report from the BBC, gay rights activist Harvey Milk has been honored on a new U.S. postage stamp. The stamp was unveiled at the White House on Thursday.

In a description of the stamp, the U.S. Postal Service says that Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, making him one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States. Tragically, his career in public office was cut short when he and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone were assassinated.

The San Francisco Examiner reports that approximately 45 people lined up outside the Castro post office before it opened for business at 9am on Thursday. Post office manager Art Corpuz told the newspaper that he ordered 6,500 stamps and had almost sold all of them by lunchtime.
