Despite being attached to the film for seven years and acting as one of its two co-writers, director Edgar Wright has officially left Marvel’s 2015 film Ant-Man.
“Marvel and Edgar Wright jointly announced today that the studio and director have parted ways on Ant-Man due to differences in their vision of the film. The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly,” states the joint statement between Marvel and the director.
Wright, who co-wrote Ant-Man with Attack the Block writer and director Joe Cornish, has been working on the film since nearly 2006. His departure is especially surprising in the wake of Marvel Studio head Kevin Feige’s 2013 Moviefone interview, where he stated that Marvel has been working with with Wright “longer than any other filmmaker since it’s been almost eight years since our initial meeting with him. I have no doubt it’ll be really great.”
It is possible that the creative “differences” between Wright and Marvel stem from disagreements regarding the future of the titular character. Marvel likely wants to use Ant-Man in future Avengers films due to the character’s ties to super-powered team in the comic books, but when Wright spoke to HuffPost Entertainment about the film last year, he said he wanted to make Ant-Man more of a standalone feature.
“Comics have years to explain this stuff and in a movie you have to focus on one thing. So it’s about kind of streamlining, I think. Some of the most successful origin films actually have a narrower focus. You cannot put 50 years of the Marvel universe into a movie. It’s impossible.”
Even with Wright stepping down as director fairly late into the film’s preproduction stage, Ant-Man, which stars Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas, is still slated for a July 17, 2015 release.
