E. coli outbreak linked to sprouts, CDC says

There is a strong link between the food poisoning cases and sprouts from Evergreen Fresh Sprouts, based in Idaho.

A multi-state outbreak of E. coli has been linked to raw clover sprouts, reports the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As of May 21, there have been 10 cases, seven confirmed and three probable, in Washington and Idaho. Half of those that became sick have been hospitalized, though no cases have been fatal as of yet.

According to the Washington State Department of Health, there is a strong link between the food poisoning cases and sprouts from Evergreen Fresh Sprouts, based in Idaho. The sprouts were eaten on sandwiches at a variety of food establishments, including Jimmy John’s, Pita Pit, and Daanen’s Deli. Though the sprouts from Evergreen Fresh Sprouts are likely the culprit, health officials are still investigating to identify the source of the sprout seed.

CNN reports that this outbreak comes along with recalls of other products for contamination concerns. Sherman Produce is recalling some bulk and packaged walnuts sold to retailers in Missouri and Illinois. Meanwhile, hummus and dip products totaling about 14,860 pounds are being voluntarily recalled by Lansal Inc. due to concerns about possible bacterial contamination. There are no known cases of food poisoning connected with either recall.

The CDC describes E. coli as a large and diverse group of bacteria.  Some kinds of E. coli can cause diarrhea, while others cause urinary tract infections, respiratory illness and pneumonia, and other illnesses. Most people recover within seven days, but some have severe complications. A type of kidney failure called hemolytic-uremic syndrome may result. The elderly and children under five are most at risk for this type of complication.
