Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty wins applause for homophobic Easter sermon

More controversy is aroused over anti-gay beliefs of the reality star.

Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson has been keeping a pretty low profile following the controversy over his interview with GQ magazine a few months ago. In the article, Robertson was quoted as expressing his extremely negative feelings about homosexuals. The media firestorm that followed caused the reality star and sometime preacher to be suspended from the show for a brief time but hasn’t had a negative effect on his faithful fans.

Some of those faithful followers were in the pews when Robertson delivered his Easter sermon on May 22 in his Louisiana hometown. The sermon garnered a tremendous round of cheers and applause, but may get the family patriarch back in hot water with the media.

The sermon, which was leaked on YouTube, shows Robertson delivering a homophobic rant in which he twisted a verse from Corinthians to suit his homophobic beliefs. “Neither the sexually immoral, nor the idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes, nor homosexual offenders, nor thieves, nor greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.”

Robertson also used his pulpit to take a shot at those who took offense at his previous remarks that likened homosexuality to bestiality. “What’s Jesus coming back for? To bring salvation to those who are waiting for it. Are you waiting on Jesus? Or are you afraid to see that sky busting, you see him coming? You got two lists. I gave some guy one list. You say, were they mad at you about that list? They were mad at me.”

While this sermon won an enthusiastic response from the hometown fans of Robertson, it’s not likely to go over well with the general public that watches Duck Dynasty. Since Robertson’s comments were published in GQ, viewership of the show has plummeted. Ratings for the show’s fifth season were down drastically from those of the previous season, before viewers were treated to the homophobic rants from the Robertson family patriarch.

While it is true that Phil Robertson has the first amendment right to speak his mind, the public also has the right to turn off his show. If the ratings for Duck Dynasty fall again, A&E may decide that the time has come to shoot down the series.
