Do you want a side of fries with that hepatitis A? Up to 5,000 exposed at Red Robin restaurant

The Springfield-Greene County Health Department has set up clinics for anyone who visited the restaurant from May 8-16.

The Associated Press reports that 5,000 people may have been exposed to hepatitis A at a Red Robin restaurant in Springfield, Missouri. Health officials said that the restaurant reported on Tuesday that an employee had hepatitis A.

According to CNN, the employee last worked at the restaurant on May 16 and that the restaurant has since been inspected and cleared by the Springfield-Greene County Health Department. However, Red Robin would not say in what area of the restaurant the individual was employed.

According to the Mayo Clinic, hepatitis A is an extremely contagious liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus. The virus is one of several kinds of hepatitis viruses that causes inflammation that impacts your liver’s ability to function. Contaminated food or water are the most likely sources of the infection. Symptoms of hepatitis A include fatigue, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, low-grade fever, dark urine, muscle pain and yellowing of the skin and eyes.

The health department, which reportedly ordered 4,000 doses of the hepatitis A vaccine, has set up clinics for anyone who visited the restaurant from May 8-16. Individuals who are pregnant or have compromised immune system are advised to consult with their doctor first.
