Latest Google Doodle is a playable Rubik's Cube

There are championship events based on solving a Rubik's Cube as quickly as possible.

If you directed your browser to Google.com at any point on Monday to make an Internet search, you likely noticed that the “Google Doodle” of the day is a depiction of the Rubik’s Cube. According to IBN Live, the colorful, cubic toy celebrates its 40th birthday today, and Google has marked the occasion by turning its main page into an interactive and fully playable version of the Rubik’s Cube. For those who could never figure out how to solve the cube in real life, here is another (and perhaps less frustrating?) opportunity to crack the code.

The first Rubik’s Cube was created in 1974 in Budapest, Hungary. The professor who created the toy, Erno Rubik, initially did not intend it as a plaything at all, but rather as an educational device that he could use to explain spatial relationships to his students. The fact that Rubik himself spent an entire month trying to unscramble the colors on the first cube was sign enough of the toy’s extreme difficulty, but there was still something beguiling and attractive about the object. The Rubik’s Cube eventually became the bestselling toy in history, and it has been frustrating players everywhere for four decades now.

Not everyone has trouble with solving the Rubik’s Cube though. In fact, there are championship events based on solving a Rubik’s Cube as quickly as possible. The first of these was held in 1982, where the winner got solid colors on every side of the cube in just 22.95 seconds. Robots are even more skilled with the solution of the puzzle: this year, a computer dubbed the “CUBESTORMER 3” set a world record by figuring out a Rubik’s Cube in just 3.253 seconds. Undoubtedly, competitive Rubik’s Cubers will be recording and publicizing their times on the Google Doodle throughout the day today.
