Video of EMT dancing to Rihanna's 'Pour It Up' goes viral

The driver says that he was no longer in service at the time and was on his way home.

Earlier this month, a YouTube video was uploaded showing an EMT dancing while he is driving. Since May 6, the video has attracted over 1.3 million views and 5,000 likes. The EMT is driving, using his radio to communicate with other personnel, playing music on the radio, and voguing.

According to CBS New York, the video and all of the attention it received has led to mixed results. Jonathan Williams, the EMT seen dancing in the video, has been reprimanded by his boss. Williams’ hands move in every direction as he tries to keep one hand on the wheel and the other on his handheld radio, resulting in concerns about safety. On the other hand, Rihanna, the pop artist he was dancing to, applauded him and appreciated his enjoyment of her music.

Others in the EMT industry are concerned about how it reflects on them. Montclair Ambulance Unit Deputy Chief Frank Carlo said that if Williams worked for him, there would have been trouble. Carlo asserts that the public trusts them to be safe, but Williams’ behavior does not show that. Williams argues that he was no longer in service at the time and was on his way home.

The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians describes an EMT as a professional that can serve in the patient compartment of an ambulance. EMTs use medical equipment such as automatic defibrillators, deliver trauma care, and are educated in a simple way to cover all injuries and diseases. EMTs are a critical part of emergency medical services in the U.S. Most EMTs work in a team with more advanced providers.
