Macklemore denies claims that his costume mocked Jewish stereotypes

Grammy award-winning rapper denies that the wig, fake beard, and prosthetic nose he wore in concert were a sign of anti-Semitism.

Last Friday, Macklemore celebrated the opening of the “Spectacle: The Music Video” exhibit at Seattle’s EMP Museum with a secret show. The viewer response to what the “Same Love” rapper hoped would be a successful surprise set in his hometown of Seattle, however, was far from what he likely expected. Joined at the event by longtime production partner Ryan Lewis, Macklemore performed their Grammy-award winning single “Thrift Shop,” but instead of being excited to hear the hit song, fans were shocked and appalled by a wig, fake beard, and prosthetic nose that Macklemore chose to adorn during the performance.

Mere seconds after the set was over, Twitter blew up with discussion over whether or not Macklemore’s costume was meant to be one big collection of offensive Jewish stereotypes. Considering the lyrics to “Thrift Shop” are about trying to save money on clothes, many believe that it was definitely the rapper’s intent to portray anti-Semitism.

‘First you trick people into thinking you’re a rapper, now you trick them into thinking you’re Jewish?’ said Neighbors actor Seth Rogen on Twitter, including the rapper’s Twitter handle in the tweet to ensure that he himself would see it.

Once the press started reporting on the controversy, Macklemore quickly issued a statement on Twitter insisting that he did not mean to offend anyone with his outfit. He even went so far as to claim that his costume was merely made up of a random collection of items.

“A fake witches nose, wig, and beard = random costume. Not my idea of a stereotype of anybody,” he tweeted.

Many members of the Twitter community, however – Seth Rogen included – still aren’t buying it.

“Really?? Because if I told someone to put together an anti Semitic Jew costume, they’d have that exact shopping list,” said the actor in response to Macklemore’s denial tweet.
