Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley, who was married to Avril Lavigne until 2010, nearly died due to alcoholism, according to a blog post written by the rocker on Friday.

“Sorry I’ve been so m.i.a. lately, but I’ve been very sick in the hospital for a month and was pretty sick for a few weeks leading up to my trip to the hospital,” he wrote in a post titled “Rock Bottom.” “The reason i got so sick is from all the hard boozing I’ve been doing over the years. It finally caught up to me. I was drinking hard every day, until one night, I was sitting at home, poured myself another drink around midnight and was about to watch a movie when all of a sudden I didn’t feel so good. I then collapsed to the ground unconscious.”

Whibley goes on to say that his fiance took him to the hospital where he was placed in the ICU because his “liver and kidneys collapsed on him.” His biggest struggle is likely to come when he leaves the hospital, as his doctor has told him that he can’t drink anymore. “If I have one drink the docs say I will die,” Whibley wrote.

The good news is that Whibley has plenty of friends and fans looking out for him, including ex-wife Avril Lavigne. “I am so proud of him. He is family to me and always will be. #StayStrongDeryck,” the singer tweeted after reading Whibley’s post.
