'Girls Gone Wild' founder Joe Francis arrested for assault

Girls Gone Wild founder Joe Francis faces misdemeanor assault charges after his latest run in with the law.

Known for his run-ins with the law, unruly behavior has resulted in misdemeanor assault charges against Girls Gone Wild founder Joe Francis who was being held in LAPD Valley Jail in Van Nuys.

Francis, 41, was arrested Friday night at his former offices. However, a restraining order, issued by the Federal Bankruptcy Court, prohibits him from coming within 100 feet of the building. LAPD West Division Sgt. Gary Levy said Francis intended to either retrieve or take photographs of personal property at the office.

He was placed under a citizen’s arrest after assaulting an employee inside the building. No one was hurt. Francis could also be charged with violation of the restraining order. He was booked into the Van Nuys jail and was subsequently released early Saturday morning on $20,000 bail.

The soft-porn mogul told TMZ that he had problems with the company’s new owner, claiming that the guy had a “business vendetta” against him. Francis claimed that he had every right to be in the building because the restraining order was no longer active and alleged that the security guard had “manhandled” his pregnant wife.

Francis filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February 2013 after years of financial troubles. He has been tied up in legal battles with one of his creditors, casino mogul Steve Wynn, since 2008. He also owes $5.8 million to Tamara Favazza, a student who successfully sued two of Francis’s production companies.

This isn’t the first run-in with the law for Francis, either. In August 2013, he was found guilty of assault and false imprisonment charges. In 2011, he took three young women to his Los Angeles home, physically attacked one of them, and held all three of them against their will. After that incident a judge ordered him to spend at least 270 days behind bars, a 36-month probation, and tasked him with completing an anger management course and a year of psychological counseling.

He is due back in court on the recent assault charge next month.
