Buying Apple? Report notes tech giant was sued more than any other company in 2013

Apple took part in many more patent lawsuits in 2013 than most people are aware of.

While Apple took part in a number of extremely high profile lawsuits last year, it’s hard to think of more than two or three. In reality though Apple was charged with more lawsuits in 2013 than any other company.

According to a report by Lex Machina, a legal analytics company located in Menlo Park, California, the total number of lawsuits that Apple received last year was 59, nine more than the next company down which was Amazon.

Patent lawsuits are becoming an epidemic in the tech industry. In fact, according to the report all 10 of the most-sued companies for patents are tech giants.

After Apple and Amazon, the next companies on the list include AT&T, Google, Dell and HTC. After Amazon the number of patents doesn’t fall too sharply either. Google, who ranked 4th on the list and had 39 lawsuits, only had 5 more lawsuits than HP who was ranked 10th and had a total of 34 lawsuits.

Unsurprisingly, other companies on the list include Samsung and Microsoft.

One might think that the number of patent lawsuits is growing larger each year and that California’s district courts are overwhelmed with lawsuits. Despite this, Lex Machina reports that the Court of California and the Central District Court of California actually saw a decrease in the number of patent lawsuits between 2012 and 2013.

Although patent cases are filed in California, many of the tech companies on the list are legally located in Delaware.

The reason for this is that Delaware has lower corporate tax laws and regulations than many other states. In fact, Apple, Amazon and Google are all incorporated in Delaware, despite the fact that they’re headquarters are all located outside the state. Several large companies really only have a P.O. box located in Delaware, simply to avoid paying the higher taxes that they would be paying in other states.
