The McDaniel campaign was quick to distance itself from Kelly.
According to a report from FoxNews.com, Clayton Thomas Kelly, a supporter of Republican Senator Thad Cochran’s challenger state Senator Chris McDaniel, has been arrested for sneaking into a care facility and taking a photo of Sen. Cochran’s bedridden wife. Kelly has been charged with exploiting a vulnerable adult and is being held on $100,000 bail.
Sen. Cochran’s wife Rose Cochran suffers from dementia and has lived at St. Catherine’s Village for 14 years, according to The Clarion-Ledger. Kelly allegedly snapped the photo by Mrs. Cochran’s bedside and later posted the photo online in a political attack on YouTube that targeted Sen. Cochran, the local newspaper reports.
“I have been fortunate to have a wonderful family, and like so many families, we are deeply affected by my wife’s serious, long-term illness, that we consider to be a very private family matter. We will continue doing everything we can to protect my wife’s safety and security,” said Sen. Cochran in a statement obtained by The Clarion-Ledger.
The McDaniel campaign was quick to distance itself from Kelly.
“I’ve reached out to Senator Cochran directly to express my abhorrence for the reprehensible actions of this individual. This criminal act is deeply offensive and my team and I categorically reject such appalling behavior. My thoughts and prayers are with Senator Cochran and his family,” state Sen. McDaniel said in a statement. “Politics is about the exchange of ideas and this type of action has no place in politics whatsoever and will not be tolerated.”
