"There’s no suffering," the lawmaker says.
Rep. Paul Ray (R-UT) wants to bring back a controversial method of execution. After news broke in late April about a botched execution involving lethal injection in Oklahoma, Ray wants reinstate the use of a firing squad.
Ray considers the firing squad a more humane and cost-effective approach for future executions. “The prisoner dies instantly. It sounds draconian. It sounds really bad, but the minute the bullet hits your heart, you’re dead. There’s no suffering,” he said, according to TIME.
Firing squads were officially outlawed in 2004, but inmates convicted prior to that date still had the option of choosing the firing squad as opposed to the default method of lethal injection. In fact, Utah inmate Ronnie Lee Gardner chose this option in 2010, which was the last execution by firing squad conducted by the state.
Ray plans to introduce the proposal during the next legislative session slated for January 2015. According to The Associated Press, both Wyoming and Missouri have proposed similar legislation which has currently stalled.
