Google Maps now shows elevation data for bike routes

Users can view the elevation data simply by entering a bike route into Google Maps on their desktops.

Bikers now can avoid steep hills when planning their routes, thanks to a feature Google quietly added to its Maps web app recently.

While the search engine giant made no official announcement, it did confirm to Techcrunch on Friday that the addition of bike route elevation profile data was a new feature of the desktop version of Google Maps. The elevation profiles are available in all the 14 countries Google offers biking directions. These include Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Great Britain, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Sweden and the United States.

Users can view the elevation data simply by entering a bike route into Google Maps on their desktops. A graphical representation of the hills on the route will then appear. The box also displays the total number of feet climbed along the route. The only time Google Maps will not show any elevation data is when the route selected is essentially flat.

For now, at least, this handy new feature is available solely on desktops. But chances are it will migrate to the mobile app sooner rather than later, as Google is constantly improving its Maps mobile suite. Earlier this month, the company unrolled a massive update to the app, adding integration for Uber taxi services, offline support, improved local business search capability, and lane-change information.

“Next time you’re caught up in a whirlwind of activity, make navigating your world a little easier,” Google Software Engineering Manager Jeffrey Hightower said in a blog post. “Take a moment to grab your phone, open up the Google Maps app, and find all you need to search, navigate and explore the world around you. Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered.”
