Google and Apple agree to a patent lawsuit ceasefire

As part of their desired reform, Google and Apple want patent trolls to be held responsible for the defendant's lawyer fees in cases they lose.

For years, the battle between Apple and Android smartphone devices has not only played out in the marketplace, but also in the courtroom. What began in 2010 as an exchange of lawsuits between Motorola and Apple (Motorola sued Apple for patent infringement first, with Apple reciprocating shortly) eventually morphed into an all-out war when Google acquired Motorola in 2012. Google’s Android operating system had become the most widespread mobile OS in the world, but Apple still had the most recognizable smartphone brand. Since then, the two companies have continued to fight for higher ground in the competitive mobile market, and that has included lawsuit victories for both.

Now, according to a report published Friday by The New York Times, Apple and Google have agreed to “dismiss all the current lawsuits that exist directly between the two companies” and form something akin to a partnership in the fight for patent reform. Precisely why or how the agreement came about is open to speculation, but it is possible that both companies were simply tired of spending so much time in the courtroom. In addition to lawsuits against Google, Apple also has a separate legal feud going on with Samsung, as the two companies have been accusing one another of copying smartphone innovations ever since the Galaxy line became a notable force in mobile devices.

It is not likely that all animosity between Apple and Google will disappear over night. However, their decision to team up for purposes of patent reform will likely go a long way toward helping them bury the hatchet. The targets of the companies’ proposed reform are so-called “patent trolls,” or businesses whose revenue comes from acquiring patents and suing companies that may have infringed them. Google and Apple, as titans of the technology world, have been frequent targets of these businesses in recent years. As part of their desired reform, Google and Apple want patent trolls to be held responsible for the defendant’s lawyer fees in cases they lose.
