Chipotle lovers get served short stories with literary cups

Many of the comedy and literary world's top names are involved in the project.

Fast food chain Chipotle has launched a new literature series on its disposable cups and bags, reports The New York Times.

Chipotle made the announcement Thursday.

The project, Cultivating Thought, is the brainchild of author Jonathan Safron Foer. The idea came to him while he was dining at Chipotle with nothing to read.

So far the literature series has attracted the efforts of a number of A-list writers and comedians. Toni Morrison, George Saunders, Malcolm Gladwell, Michael Lewis and Sheri Fink are among the accomplished writers contributing original work.

In addition, comedians Sarah Silverman and Bill Hader have lent their words, as well as filmmaker Judd Apatow.

Curator Jonathan Safron Foer also contributes.

Foer’s submission is Two-Minute Personality Test, posing such questions as, “Is there anything you would die for if no one would ever know you died for it?” and “When you pass a storefront, do you look at what’s inside, look at your reflection, or neither?”

Each contribution is expected to occupy two minutes of the readers’ time. Malcolm Gladwell submitted Two-Minute Barn-Raising, while Toni Morrison wrote Two-Minute Seduction.

“I loved the idea of connecting to people in the real world,” says Gladwell, in an interview on the project’s website. “I used to always love when the subway in New York would put poems in the subway cars. This struck me as a similar kind of experiment.”

We’re hoping this will allow people to connect with the musings of these writers with whom they may or may not be familiar,” reads a statement on the project’s website, “and create a moment of analog pause in a digital world, provoking introspection or inspiration, and maybe a little laughter.”

Each of the two-minute submissions are available online.
