According to a report from WWMT-TV, Sarah Thistleth-Waite gave birth to a set of rare “mono mono” twins on Mother’s Day, meaning that newborns Jenna and Jillian shared the same amniotic sac and placenta. Amazingly, the girls were also born holding hands.
The Akron Beacon Journal reports that the twins were delivered at 2:41 p.m. on Sunday via C-section at Akron General. Jenna, weighing four pounds and two ounces, is 48 seconds older than Jillian, who weighs three pounds and 13 ounces.
Citing Dr. Melissa Mancuso, the director of Children’s Regional Fetal Treatment Center, the Akron Beacon Journal adds that the odds of giving birth to mono mono twins are one in 10,000 births.
Thistleth-Waite told The Associated Press that her daughters were taken off ventilators Sunday afternoon and are able to breathe comfortably on their own.
“It’s just hard to put into words how amazing it feels to know the girls are OK,” Thistleth-Waite told The AP.
